MacNiallais was elected spokesperson for the Bogside Residents' Group in 1995,
in Londonderry. Mr MacNiallais is a member of the group's eight-member executive
committee. He served sixteen years in the top-security Maze prison for possession
of firearms. The court heard he and another man planned to open fire on police
officers before they were spotted and arrested. He told the RUC that he had
intended to 'put a bullet in the back of his head' when asked what he intended
to do to a policeman.
His mother, Mary Niallas, is a Sinn Fein councillor in Londonderry and a leading figure in the party structure.Convicted of posessing arms with intent to endanger life. He went on the dirty protest in Long Kesh and then went on the IRA hunger strike, but was one of those who was still alive when the hunger strike ended.
Now
employed at taxpayers expense as an 'Irish Language promotion worker'. As chair
of the self-styled "Bogside Residents Group" he has been to the forefront
in opposing the right of local Orangemen to parade their traditional route around
Derry's walls. Robin Percival is also a member of the Bogside residents group.
Now
Donncha MacNialliais a member of the Northern Ireland Civic Forum the man who
leads protests against Apprentice Boys Marches in Londonderry, wants to represent
Sinn Fein in local politics.
MacNialliais, who is at the forefront of the Bogside Residents' Groups in their
opposition to the annual loyal order marches in Londonderry, has been nominated
to stand on a Sinn Fein ticket at the forthcoming Derry City Council elections.
He confirmed yesterday, "My nomination has been submitted and it is now a matter for the party to decide. If selected it will then be up to electorate to choose who they think can best represent their interests in the Council Chamber. I believe I am capable of doing this".
