Cathal Crumley is married to an American and has 3 children. He was jailed for IRA membership and in 1976. He murdered a 54 year old unarmed, off duty RUC Reservist Charlie Crothers, 5th October 1982 while Charlie was at work at the Department of Enviroment, Altnagelvin. He was arrested in 1982 on the evidence of two witnesses and charged with Murder, and conspiracy to murder. He received nine life sentences in 1984, and was elected Sinn Fein member for the Cityside ward of the Bogside, Creggan and brandywell in 1985. One witness recanted and convictions were overturned. He was still a Sinn Fein Councillor for the Cityside ward in 1986. In 2000 he was appointed Mayor of Londonderry with help from the SDLP. As Mayor he welcomed to the city Tony Doherty a double murderer in Londonderry in July 2000.

Doherty, Anthony (Tony) is a self-confessed IRA gunman who was given sentences totalling almost 750 years in October 1993 for his involvement in 74 terrorist crimes. Doherty of Londonderry was given life terms for the murders of Ulster Democratic Party members Cecil McKnight and Gary Lynch in June and August 1991.

At his trial the judge said Doherty had a "profound and abiding" commitment to terrorism.
