Newtownbutler
Nationalists called from all over Ireland to block parade
Tensions rise as preceptory refuses to call off march Newtownbutler residents have called on nationalists from across Ireland to gather in the village tomorrow to prevent a Royal Black Institution Parade passing through.
Their call came after a meeting attended by several hundred residents from the area. The move has heightened tension in the area. Tempers rose in Newtownbutler yesterday after it was learned that Royal Black Institution members intended to go ahead with their march through the village tomorrow. Six protesters and two RUC officers were injured last week when police cleared the road to allow a Black Perceptory church parade through Newtownbutler.
It had been hoped that the sting had been taken out of the marching issue following the example shown by Orangemen in voluntarily re-routing parades in July and the Apprentice Boys accommodation reached with the Bogside Residents' Group earlier this month. However, last night Newtownbutler Residents Association was calling on "nationalists throughout Ireland to come along and support the residents of Newtownbutler in their time of need" if attempts are made to force the Royal Black Institution march through the village.
Were is the parity of esteem for a different tradition which is in effect a colourful parade?
A police spokesman said no decision had been made on whether to allow the parade to pass through the village in the morning and again in the evening when the Blackmen return from Maguiresbridge 10 mile away. Newtownbutler residents' spokesman Kevin Lawrenson said villagers were calling on the Blackmen to voluntarily call off the parade "in order to defuse a volatile situation." He said a protest by residents from nearby Roslea was called off after Blackmen there voluntarily re-routed their parade away from the village. "We are calling on nationalists from all over Ireland to come to Newtownbutler tomorrow and support our peaceful protest. The parades here are the only contentious ones in all of the north of Ireland this weekend as all other have been re-routed and protests cancelled," he said. Mr Lawrenson said no vote had been taken at the meeting which was barred to the media.
Why was it barred from the media were they afraid the vote would go against them?
He said no one spoke against the decision at the gathering.(As we all know it is not good for the human body should you voice an opinion as Sinn Fein IRA are quite capable of putting holes in the body were they do not belong).
Members of Newry Coalition Against Sectarian Marches have filed notice of their intention to hold three parades which will clash with loyal order parades later this month. Coalition chairman John McCabe said: "The media at the moment are focussed on other contentious areas while the serious situation in Newry is ignored. Given the serious destruction in the town last month the public certainly do not want a repeat therefore it is of paramount interest that talks with all sides commence."
Again the Sinn Fein IRA led residents up the ante against the Protestant community.
