Joe O’Hagan was a IRA activist for 60 years. He took place in a prison escape in the Irish republic in 1973 when he escaped with two other leading IRA men in a helicopter which landed in the exercise yard and lifted them over the walls of the prison. Dara O'Hagan's father spent most of his life in jail. The funeral was attended by the entire leadership of Sinn Fein, including Sinn Fein's party president Gerry Adams MLA and colleagues Martin McGuinness MLA (minister of education?) and Gerry Kelly MLA, who all helped carry the coffin.(By their actions you shall know them). Veteran and high-profile republican IRA men such as Joe Cahill, Padraig Wilson and Martin Meehan also attended. A tricolour was draped over the coffin and a beret and a pair of gloves rested on it.
