Owen Carron
At Owen Carron's eve of election rally in Fermanagh and South Tyrone in l98l, Gerry Adams described the IRA prisoners as "freedom fighters" and their fight as a "legitimate struggle". (Irish Times 20.8.81)
Carron did not disagree. Carron went on to accept his election victory "on behalf of (IRA) political prisoners-of-war." (Irish Times 22.8.81).
At a Republican Rally Carron was even more outspoken in his support of the IRA saying that their murder campaign was a "heroic struggle" and a "legitimate and just war." (An Phoblacht 24.6.82).
He went on to appeal to people to join the IRA campaign in order to intensify the violence. "We therefore, once again urge the young men and women of this generation to come forward and join the Republican movement, to expand and strengthen it so that we can escalate the struggle at every level and particularly to sustain and increase the momentum of the armed struggle ....Victory to the freedom fighters" (An Phoblacht 24.6.82).
