IRA man is identified as protest chief

The main figure behind Springfield Residents Action Group has been identified as Sean "Spike" Murray, a leading IRA member who has served time for explosives offences. Murray, from the lower Springfield Road area, was in control of a crowd of protesters opposing the Orange parade as it proceeded down Workman Avenue to cross the peace-line. Murray was found guilty in 1982 of possession of explosives with intent, possession of explosives in suspicious circumstances and of carrying out an act with intent of causing an explosion. He appealed in 1983 but was unsuccessful. According to security sources, Murray and Frances McAuley were in the front line of protests. "They were under the same codes of conduct and guidelines as the Orangemen but they breached every article under these codes of conduct, including diverting from the route and refusing to co-operate with the police. "The protest was clearly shown to be orchestrated by these people and there were clearly outsiders involved," said the source. News-letter 2 July 1998

Loyalists Capture Shankhill bomber on film

CAUGHT ON CAMERA...Shankill Bomber Sean Kelly pictured near the Loyalist Glenbryn district of North Belfast during the recent stand-off between Protestant residents and gangs of marauding IRA suupporters who threatened and intimidated elderly pensioners on their way to Ardoyne Post Office to collect their weekly pension.

LOYALISTS are furious at the double standards shown by the British Government when it comes to returning anti-Agreement paramilitaries on trumped up charges.

Following the incarceration of UFF leader Johnny Adair, the Northern Ireland Office were quick to place UDA member Gary Smyth behind bars in HMP Maghaberry while turning a blind eye to the activities of IRA members.

The photograph of Sean Kelly taking part in the protests near Loyalist homes in the Glenbryn area of North Belfast has enraged Protestants. To highlight the inequality of justice shown by the British Government and the Northern Ireland office UDA members are videoing the confrontation hot spots to illustrate how Sinn Fein/IRA members are orchestrating anti Protestant violence and intimidation.

UDP Chairman John White said: "I understand the UDA are building up video footage and still picture shots of IRA members involved in protests to illustrate how a different approach is being taken by the authorities.

"Gary Smith was arrested and returned to prison, but people on the republican side who have carried out attrocities aren't sent back to jail.

"The Government appears intent on placating nationalists and republicans and oppressing loyalists."
